WHEELIE BINS
Despite their innocent appearance, wheelie bins occupy a critical position in any narrative of waste management. Being situated at the interface of private lives, corporate industry and household practices, on the one hand, and public health and environmental management on the other, dustbin technologies provide a revealing indicator of waste-relationships within society.
In describing key moments in the history of domestic dustbins, from the development of the ash pit privy in the late 1800s through the standardisation of moveable metal bins in the 1900s to the evolution of contemporary bin technologies, including "waste guzzling" wheelie bins, and diversified recycling bins, we track both the meanings of waste, and the shifting boundaries of its public and private management over time.
Put simply, this is a story of increasing specialisation and of growing collective, if not public sector, responsibility. From the standard black dustbin to multi-coloured recycling bins, we show how each bin is moulded by the interests of specific constellations of actors, each contributing to the specification of new types of waste and the re-configuring of waste management activity on the part of households, local authorities, and a range of commercial organisations.
